GOOD TO KNOW
Must-Haves
T hree th in gs e v e ry h ostess needs to set a table th a t’s both
b eau tifu l and m eaningful.
SOMETHING OLD
“Always set your table
with at least one piece
that honors your
family’s past,” Rosanna
says. “Shop your
grandmother’s attic for
pitchers, platters, and
tablecloths— I bet she’d
love to share them with
you.” If you don’t have
that kind of access, start
a new tradition: Shop an
antiques mall for linens
and serving pieces.
(Compotes are a great
find for serving or for
displaying flowers, left.)
“Old dishes add beauty
and soul to your table
for not much money.”
CANDLELIGHT
“I love votives. En
masse on a tray or
sprinkled around the
table, they create so
much atmosphere for so
little money.” They’re
also safer and easier
to use than tapers.
Use white, unscented,
smokeless candles and
trim the wicks short
(fingernail clippers
work well for this).
“My easy trick for
getting spent votives
out of their holders: Put
them in the freezer for
30 minutes and they
pop right out.”
W H ITE PLATES
They’re always right,
no matter the occasion,
and you can change
your whole look just by
adding a smaller plate in
a fun pattern or color. “I
believe in this approach
so much that all the
patterned plates in my
line are salad or dessert
size,” Rosanna says.
The white plates don’t
have to be expensive,
but Rosanna does
recommend investing in
porcelain. “It’s a treat to
eat off of,” she says.
